Sa Vidya ya Vimuktaye

Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye

Dialogue between Albert Einstein and his lecturer of History:

'In what year, Einstein, did the Persians defeat the French at Waterloo?'

'I don't know, Sir.'

'Why don't you know? You have been told it often enough….'

'I think it is not facts that matter, but IDEAS. I don't see a point in learning the dates of the battles or even which of the armies killed more of the men. I would be more interested in learning why those soldiers would want to kill each other.'

That is, knowledge must be transformed into wisdom. 'Teachers never encouraged me. Instead they would sarcastically remark that I could not learn Maths for next seven lives. However, I never considered myself to be feeble minded or inferior. Day in, day out I worked hard. Even I was physically exhausted. I never lost track of my goal. Even in adverse circumstances I kept on working with patience and perseverance and just because of that I could achieve my goal.'

The moral of the story is students should not feel discouraged in difficult situations.

In Einstein's views KNOWLEDGE LIBERATES MIND. Material possessions may make for satisfaction of physical desires, but craving for them is of the mind. The universe is changing ceaselessly. Knowledge must enable us to survive all kinds of onslaughts from within and without.
