The Living God

Swamiji wrote this to an American friend from Almora on 9 Jul 1897. This poem reflects the Swamiji's trend of thought during this period, which is expressed in a letter written to Miss Mary Hale on the same date :

May I be born again and again, and suffer thousands of miseries so that I may worship the only God that exists, the only God I believe in, the sum total of all souls – and above all, my God the wicked, my God the miserable, my God the poor of all races, of all species, is the special object of my worship.

He who is in you and outside you,

Who works through all hands,

Who walks on all feet,

Whose body are all ye,

Him worship, and break all other idols!

He who is at once the high and low,

The sinner and the saint,

Both God and worm,

Him worship – visible, knowable, real, omnipresent,

Break all other idols!

In whom is neither past life,

Nor future, birth and death,

In whom we always have been

And always shall be one,

Him worship, Break all other idols!

Ye fools! Who neglect the living God,

And His infinite reflections with which the world is full,

While ye run after imaginary shadows,

That lead alone to fights and quarrels,

Him worship, the only visible!

Break all other idols!

Thakur makes some interesting observations which form the basis for the worship of God in Man :

If God can be worshipped in images, can He not be worshipped in Man ?

If one can meditate on God with eyes closed, can one not meditate on God with eyes open?

Can a puny creature like man ever help another? He can only serve God in them.
