Which yoga asana is best for losing weight and belly fat?

Yoga is well-known for increasing mindfulness and the way a person relates to his or her body. The ancient Indian science of exercise and healing can make you more aware of what you eat and improve your food habits. This means yoga can be an effective tool for losing weight and improving health. In fact, many experts claim that yoga can effectively facilitate weight loss in several ways when combined with evidence-based nutritional guidance.

Regular practice of yoga has been linked to many physical and mental health benefits, such as lowering high blood pressure, decreasing stress and anxiety, and reducing the risk of heart disease. There are many yoga asnanas and poses that can help increase flexibility, build muscle tone, and give you a flat tummy. Here’s one weight loss yoga pose that is considered effective for burning belly fat, and toning hips and thighs.

Half Boat Pose (Ardha Navasana) for weight loss

The Half Boat Pose or Ardha Navasana is a variation of the Boat Pose (Navasana) and could be an excellent yoga asana to do when you’re trying to lose weight and reduce belly fat. This pose directly works the stomach and tones your whole body. It is said to help regulate the function of your kidneys and pancreas. It helps strengthens the hip muscles and spinal column (mainly lower back muscles), improving your core balance and posture.

The Half Boat Pose also helps improve digestion and is helpful for constipation. This yoga asana can regularise the menstrual cycle. Apart from physical benefits, this pose can help relieve stress and boost your focus and concentration.

How to do the Half Boat Pose (Ardha Navasana)

To do this yoga pose –

  • Sit on the mat with your legs spread out in front of you, putting your palms down on the ground for balance.
  • Bend your knees and lean your torso back.
  • Lift up the feet to the knee height, ensuring that your legs are parallel to the floor.
  • Now, raise your toward the feet so that they are parallel to the floor.
  • Stay in this pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute (or as long as you can).
  • Breathe out as you release the pose, relax, and repeat.

Doing this pose on a regular basis should make you feel you’re burning your abs away, if you’re doing it right.

According to experts, practicing yoga and meditation may help develop mindfulness during mealtimes, aid awareness of portion sizes, food preparation and eating speed - all of which can be beneficial for weight loss.

A word of caution: You may avoid doing this pose if you suffer from low blood pressure, have had a recent or neck or back injury. Also, you should do yoga under the guidance of an expert, especially if you’re a beginner.
